At Tribeca Maternity, We Don’t Shy Away From Menopause In Therapy

Perimenopause, menopause, and the many transitions this major change entails are largely ignored in our culture. At Tribeca Maternity, we talk about all of it. During this time, your hormones are changing, which means you are also changing.

Hormonal shifts can have an effect on you emotionally, and so can the identity shift that may come with it. Menopause is the end of your reproductive time, which may alter the way you think and feel about yourself and your place in the world. Sometimes this is a celebration; other times it’s about mourning. We hold space for both of these experiences and everything in between.

You Aren’t Invisible During or After Menopause

During menopause, your existence in the world—and how the world views you—is shifting as well. This may be wanted, unwanted, or unknown, but it’s often emotional. Despite how you may feel (or are made to feel), you aren’t invisible. You have value. In therapy in our Tribeca offices, as well as in our online therapy offerings, we’ll talk about what that value means to you, who you are, and how you see yourself now.

Sex and Your Understanding of Your Sexiness May Also Change

Society tells women that sexiness is about youth and fertility. During menopause, sexiness changes. You may no longer be seen as a sexual being in the same way as you once were, which can be a hugely emotional shift. In therapy, we’ll help you:

  • Navigate how to claim your sexiness during menopause, as well as your relationship with sex
  • Talk with you alone, or with a partner, about what you need sexually
  • Process and accept that menopause and your feelings around it are happening, while also appreciating that you are still you

With Menopause, Maternity Looks Different

During menopause, the time of conceiving the old-fashioned way may be over, but sometimes you’re not ready to stop having children. You may have to have a baby in a new way, whether through implantation, adoption, or a surrogate. We allow space to talk about what maternity will look like for you and what it means to you, no matter what age or stage of menopause you’re at. We can also help you decide with intention to either stop trying to conceive or to try to conceive in a different way.
