Doctors Are an Important Part of Your Life During and After Pregnancy

OB’s, midwives, IVF clinics, pediatricians—doctors and other medical providers become an enormous part of your and your family’s life during pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. In therapy at Tribeca Maternity, we’ll help you navigate these intimate relationships by:

  • Assessing the support you’re receiving
  • Exploring how you’re feeling in these relationships
  • Dealing with anxiety, frustration, or fear brought up by a doctor or the difficulty of the current situation
  • Figuring out how to assert your authority and get what you need

Therapy Can Help You Decide Whether a Doctor Is the Right Fit and Switch Doctors If They’re Not

There’s an important emotional aspect to choosing a doctor. Does the doctor or provider let you ask all your questions? Do they make space for your needs?  When a provider isn’t right for whatever reason, you’ll know it. In therapy at our Lower Manhattan offices, as well as in our online therapy offerings, we’ll help you:

  • Talk with your current provider and interview others to make sure they’re the right fit
  • Create a plan to assert your questions and concerns
  • Switch providers when it’s not a good match (even if this is into your third trimester or after the baby is born)
  • Raise hard questions or make a change with confidence as a protective parent

If Something Went Wrong, We Help You Talk About It

During labor, delivery, and copious other medical procedures, a medical intervention or an interaction with a doctor may have gone wrong—or at least, it didn’t feel right to you. We’ll help you figure out how to talk about the experience and how to address it with your doctor, including deciding to not talk to them at all.

We Help Couples Locate Themselves in the Relationships With Doctors

When dealing with doctors and other medical providers, you are doing so as a couple. We help each partner locate themselves in these relationships as a unified front by:

  • Sharing their individual experiences with doctors and other providers
  • Unpacking a birth experience
  • Planning how to talk with a provider
  • Deciding if a doctor is the right match and how to move forward if they’re not
