Psychology (Today) on the NYC Subway

Display of magazines.

I did a double take when I saw this magazine rack on a New York City subway platform Saturday morning.

No, it wasn't Cher in a leotard. Look a bit further down and to the right. That's Psychology Today alongside (and fitting right in with) Lucky, Cosmo, and Glamour.

At first glance, I thought, "Gee, Psychology Today looks just like all those other magazines."

But I think there's a seemingly identically yet radically different observation to be made, namely that all those other magazines look just like Psychology Today.

In other words: Those other magazines are all psychology magazines. (Just take a look at the article titles.)

I don't think this is a good thing.

(Also, I'll bet anyone the cost of a ride on the NYC Subway that this ends up as Psychology Today's best selling issue ever.)
